Working for 17 years for a photography company, Elizabeth has developed a talent for layout and design. Doug's interests also include photography from collecting camera equipment, taking photography courses, working with professional photographers to taking numerous and creative photos. Over the years their skills have blossomed and reflect many of their interest.
Rocks & Gems
Doug's interests in gems and rock have spread throughout the family. Originating from finding an old rock collection in an old abandoned home, the entire family enjoys collecting and creating things with rocks. Doug has expanded his talents by learning to cut stones. The lapidary arts have become a wonderful activity where both Doug and Beth enjoy cutting stones. The Gaston Gem and Mineral Club has become an important area of interest for Doug. This hobby consumes most of the family activities, vacations, and fun.
Canoeing & Kayaking
We both enjoy a refreshing paddle down a quick river in a canoe or our flat water kayaks. Many vacations have included a water event - one our favorites is the chilling Nantahala River. We have also tested the waters around Charlotte (Lake Wylie, Lake Norman and Whippoorwill Lake), the New River, Bald Head Island, the French Broad, and the Tuckaseigee River.
Fishing
Doug's favorite pastime is catching fish - notice I did not say just fishing. He definitely wants to catch fish and not just hold a fishing rod waiting for the fish to bite. With a fabulous collection of rods and reels, Doug can enjoy everything from fresh water fishing using his favorite cane pole to salt water fishing in the Gulf Stream. Not even a rough ride will slow Doug down, his most recent adventures included 8-10 ft. waves and everyone on the boat becoming sick, including the captain.
Cooking
Pull out the grill and the charcoal, cuz year round both Doug and Beth love to grill. Doug favorites include salmon, tuna, chicken and pork tenderloin and don't forget the fresh veggies - corn in the husk cannot be beat. For family birthdays, we often pull out the fish fryer and cook the fish caught by Doug on his fishing excursions.
